The
Morgans have resided in Marianna, (Jackson County), Florida for over 150
years. The matriarch of the family at the time, Elvina (Viney) Morgan,
moved to Jackson County, Florida with her slave owner, Nicholas Morgan, her
son, Joseph, and his new bride, Charity Russ Morgan. Due to the
commonality of slaves' not being listed in the U. S. Census by their given
names, there are no
actual documents to prove this, but this is strongly believed. From this
union, six children were born. Our direct line comes from one of these
children, Nepton Morgan. Nepton was born April 22, 1879; he later married
Mary Ann Merritt May 19, 1904. Of this union, seventeen children were
born. Our father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Walter Morgan, was one of
the last five siblings to be born. Walter, born on March 15, 1916, lived the
life of many African Americans during the turn of the century.
A
life of toil and laborious work was prevalent for him and his family.
Walter enlisted in the U. S. Army on August 13, 1942 as a cook. During his
travels in the service, he was
stationed in
Waco, Texas. Shortly afterwards, he met the lovely Annie Marie Bush of Elm
Mott, McLennan, Texas. They were united in holy matrimony June 14, 1945,
and Mr. Morgan took his bride back to Marianna. Their family grew, and the
Morgans had a total of eighteen children.
